  • Collection Vessel: The final destination for the condensed liquid, separating the essential oil from the water.

The Distillation Process

  • Plant Material Preparation: Fresh or dried plant material is placed in the steam chamber.

  • Heating: Water in the boiler is heated to produce steam, which rises through the plant material.

  • Steam Interaction: As steam passes through the plant material, it ruptures oil glands, releasing essential oils.

  • Condensation: The steam, now carrying essential oils, is cooled in the condenser, resulting in liquid form.

  • Separation: The collected liquid undergoes a separation process, separating water and essential oil.

  • Choosing the Right Still: Selecting an essential oil still depends on factors like the type of plant material, desired oil yield, and budget. Common types include copper alembic stills, stainless steel stills, and steam distillation units.
